Nutrition
Calcium: Role in Diet-Bone formation. abouth 35% of the equine skeleton is made up of calcium and play a crucial role in cell-energy tranfer, muscle contraction and blood clotting.
Chloride: Role in Diet-help maintain the body's acid-base balance, aid in the conduction of the nerve and muscle impulses and regulated fluid pressures throughout the body tissues. Chloride is essential component of both liver bile and hydrochloric acid used in digestion.
Magnesium: Role in Diet-Magnesium is essential for strong bone and isn't necessary to activate many enzymes in the body.
Phosphorous: Role in Diet- Phosphorous makes up 14% to 17% of the horse's bones. It is Essential in the chemical reaction that create energy to move the horse's muscles.phosphorous is also used within the body to create specific fat, proteins, and acids needed for various body functions.
How Horses Digest Feed
How does the horse digest Feed and Therefore make use of the Nutriets Contained within the Feed Stuffs it Consumes ?
The type of feed has a dramatic effect on the speed of ingestion. A horse will chew between 3500 and 4500 time per kg of dry hay Consumed, taking about 40 minutes to eat each kg of hay. Therefore ,If 12 kg of hay is provided each day, the horse will spend at least 8 hours Feeding. When grains and other concentrate feeds are Substituted for Fiber in the diet the total time spent feeding will be markedly reduced -1kg of oats can be consumed in 10 minutes or less, Requiring only 850 chews. So, a diet of 7 kg hay 5 kg oats will decrease feeding time by 2 to 3 hours.Such Reduction in feeding time are thought to cause boredom and other behavioral problem. This is another Reason why Fiber is such an important part of the horse Diet.
The Six Nutrients
1.Water 2.Protein 3.Carbohydrates 4.Fat 5.Minerals 6.Vitamins
Hay is the main stay of any horse's diet. Alfalfa hay has higher protein and three times the amount of Calcium and Vitamins than grass hay. It is often fed to the young, growing horses. It feeds about two pounds of hay per day for every 100 pounds of body weight. A 1000lbs horse would need 20 pounds of feed daily split into two servings of ten pounds. Good hay is free of mold, dust, and weeds, Which has a bright green color and fresh smell. In fact, a good Appetite is the best sign that your horse is Healthy.
Water
If a horse lack water,he can lose his Appetite and color. A horse drink about 8 - 10 gallons of water a day , Usually within one or two hours of eating hay. When a horse is over heated from Exercise, let him sip water and walk him in between sips. When he has Stabilized, feed him hay and allow him to drink water.
Feeding Safety
Since the digestive system of horses is designed to handle small frequent meals, feed two to three times daily. Make sure the horse has a set feeding schedule at the same time every day. Horses have a strong biological clock, feeding late or inconsistently can result in Colic.
Horse Vitals
Pulse Rate: 30 to 40 beats per minute
Respiratory Rate: 12 to 20 beats per minute
Rectal Temperature: 99.5 f to 101.5 f, If the horse's temperature exceeds 102.5 f contact your Veterinarian Immediately. Temperatures over 103 f can indicate a serious disorder or ailement with the horse.
I would not overfeed and under-work my Racehorse. I would provide good, Clean, dust - free hay . Clean-water, and Fresh - cut green - cut chop for my Racehorse.
When Riders stand up in the Stirrups for slow Gallops,They are forcing your horses to work off the forequarters (Pounding the ground) If the riders sit down in the saddle it would help your Racehorses work off their hindquarters. Developing more driving power and helping keep them sound.
